Many of your will have a version of Amazon’s Alex home voice assistant speaker (aka “smart speaker”). You’re also probably aware that Amazon records a lot of what you say to Alexa – nearly everything in fact!

If you are even remotely security conscious or concerned about your privacy you’d probably rather avoid this happening. Well, good news, you can!

Hidden deep in the Amazon Alex app is a means to disable storage of voice recordings. To do this simply:

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  2. Open the More menu and select Settings.
  3. Select Alexa Privacy.
  4. Select Manage Your Alexa Data.
  5. Go to Choose how long to save recordings.
  6. Select Don't save recordings.

You can also find some other interesting privacy settings here if you wish to lock down your privacy yet further.

I like the ease of use of Alexa, but always had privacy concerns. Hopefully I can now have the best of both worlds.
